Fort Saskatchewan is located 25 kilometers north east of Edmonton, Alberta. It is established along the North Saskatchewan River and is bordered by Strathcona County to the South and East and Sturgeon County to the North and West. The city has a population of 26,328 residents according to the 2018 municipal census.
Fort Saskatchewan’s economy is mainly commercial and industrial, and the surrounding region is supported by four petrochemical facilities: Dow Chemical, Sherritt International, Agrium and Shell Canada, making it part of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Transportation, tourism, sales and services and business support the economy as well.
The city is home to the Dow Centennial Centre, a multi-use facility which opened in 2004 and features a fitness center, ice arena, indoor track, preforming arts theater, and banquet hall. The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP services the region and the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital opened its doors 2012 and provides a myriad of services including acute care and emergency to the city and surrounding area. Fort Saskatchewan is also home to six Elementary Schools, three junior High Schools, and three High Schools.
Fort Sask Transit provides two routes throughout the city as well as connecting Fort Saskatchewan to Edmonton with a stop at the Edmonton Clareview Station.
An expanding commercial district south of Highway 21 includes Wal-Mart, Safeway, Canadian Tire, Home Depot and chain restaurants. Old Downtown Fort Saskatchewan is being revitalized with a newly renovated City Hall and Public Library, small businesses and weekly markets in the summer season.
Fort Saskatchewan’s location in the Edmonton Metropolitan region makes it a strong and diverse community to live and work in with plenty of opportunity and resources.
